Manchester City vs. Burnley

After establishing a two-goal lead through Graham Alexander and Steven Fletcher, it seemed the Clarets were slumping to yet another defeat when City roared into the lead thanks to Shaun Wright-Phillips, Kolo Toure and Craig Bellamy.

City looked more likely to add a fourth late on rather than Burnley grabbing an equaliser, but out of nothing substitute David Nugent picked out Fletcher and his cross was tucked away by McDonald.

It was the least that Burnley deserved, however, following an impressive performance.

City were simply awful in the first-half. The £50m back four was shambolic and Carlos Tevez and Emmanuel Adebayor up-front failed to even lay a glove on Burnley’s unheralded defenders.

The squad Owen Coyle has assembled cost a fraction of the one Hughes has at his disposal, but what they lack in star quality they go some way to making up for with endeavour, team spirit and an eye for an opportunity.

And it was with a sense of purpose that Alexander drilled home the penalty after Joleon Lescott had handled Tyrone Mears' right-wing cross.

Lescott’s raised arm cut out a Tyrone Mears cross, so Attwell had no option but to point to the spot.

And veteran midfielder Alexander maintained his 100 per cent penalty record for Burnley by netting his 13th out of 13 with a powerful strike past Given.

Scotland international Alexander’s strike-rate from the spot is incredible, with his latest penalty taking his career tally to 69 scored from 74 spot-kicks.

Any sense that was a fluke was quickly exposed, as was Wayne Bridge's defending, when Fletcher doubled the visitors' lead.

Bridge has not quite delivered since his £10million move from Chelsea last January and speculation suggests Hughes has not abandoned the idea of bringing in a replacement.

Shaun Wright-Phillips had a volley correctly ruled out for offside on 38 minutes as City attempted to claw themselves back into the game.

And after keeper Brian Jensen palmed Bellamy’s left-foot strike around the post on 41 minutes, Wright-Phillips threw City a lifeline by scoring with a shot that deflected off former City defender Stephen Jordan.

City sensed the visitors’ nerves and Burnley collapsed in the space of four second-half minutes by conceding twice.

Kolo Toure dragged City level with a tap-in from six yards after Lescott had squared Gareth Barry’s 54th minute free-kick.

City's third was not quite a replica but the cross from Wright-Phillips, who had been sent galloping into the box by Stephen Ireland, was from the same side.

And Bellamy was also in oceans of space as he fired home the fifth goal of a very impressive season.

City couldn’t hold onto their lead and they were punished when McDonald snatched a point for Burnley at the death. A deserving win by Burnley.
