Tottenham Hotspur vs. Stoke City

It was the Potter’s first win at White Hart Lane since 1975 and their first away win of the season too.

Stoke substitute Glenn Whelan grabbed the only goal of the match four minutes from time and secured the three points for his team.

Both teams started positively, and the visitors had a shot early on from Matthew Etherington which was bound to hit the nets, but a heroic header at the last moment by Jonathan Woodgate, making his first appearance of the season, kept the score-line staying leveled. However, he had to leave the field few minutes later owing to the injury he sustained during this effort to save a goal.

Stand-in goalkeeper Steve Simonsen put in an inspired performance after Thomas Sorensen was taken ill before kick-off. He made a series of saves to deny Spurs any chance to goal, securing Stoke ninth place in the Premier League table.

The Potters endured long periods of pressure as Harry Redknapp's charges kept testing the back line to find some space to fire the ball home.

At least Spurs refused to let their morale dip. They maintained their siege of the Stoke goal after the interval, with Robbie Keane enjoying a rare sight of goal in the 49th minute after being put through by Wilson Palacios.

But the Republic of Ireland striker's angled shot was well saved by Simonsen and Ryan Shawcross brilliantly denied Crouch on the rebound.

With the home fans growing edgy, Redknapp sent Roman Pavlyuchenko in place of Keane to add some stability to his force in a bid to break the deadlock.

But Stoke remained unruffled and with just five minutes remaining, they landed a blow of their own and jumped to the lead. A fine run from Ricardo Fuller ended with the striker laying back to Whelan, who curled the ball into the top left corner.

Stoke bagged three points and managed to maintain a clean sheet at White Hart Lane.
